Koshinawa (Rope)

About 5 feet long, the kind called kara-uchi-no-himo is the best for the purpose. Fasten a ring or loop to one of the ends, and carry it either fastened to the sword scabbard or on the right side of the waist under the uwa-obi. This cord is useful in many ways, as, for instance, kuragatame (securing a saddle), shiba tsunagi (tethering a horse), or torinawa (binding a prisoner). Sometimes it replaces the helmet-cord should the latter be cut.
